Understanding Echocardiograms

An echocardiogram is a non‑invasive way to look at your pet’s heart.  Much like an ultrasound, this test uses sound waves to produce detailed images of the heart’s chambers, valves and motion.  Our team uses these images to help evaluate heart function and gain a deeper understanding of your companion’s cardiovascular health.  Pets remain comfortable throughout the procedure while we gently place a small transducer on their chest to capture real‑time pictures of the heart.

Why Consider Echocardiograms?

Early awareness of heart changes can be reassuring for both you and your pet.  Regular echocardiograms support early detection of heart murmurs, congenital abnormalities or other structural changes that may not produce outward symptoms right away.  For animals already diagnosed with a cardiac issue, these studies provide ongoing insight that helps evaluate heart function and monitor how well their heart is working over time.  Some breeds—such as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Boxers and Doberman Pinschers—are at higher risk for certain heart conditions, so periodic screening can be especially valuable.

When to Schedule an Echocardiogram

If your pet has been coughing, seems more tired than usual, breathes hard after light activity or has been noted to have a heart murmur during a wellness exam, an echocardiogram may be recommended.  Our veterinarian may also suggest this test for breeds at higher risk or as a follow‑up to other diagnostic imaging.  Scheduling an echocardiogram can provide peace of mind for pet parents by giving a clear picture of your pet’s heart health and ensuring any concerns are addressed promptly.
